The flag of the Dominican Republic features a beautiful design and its fair share of history. The corners of the flag are alternating red and blue, with a white cross through the center which features the coat of arms of the Dominican government. Only flags on government property feature the coat of arms however. Private Citizens fly flags that feature only the colors and cross.
The colors have both history and symbolism attached to them. The red and the blue are colors taken from Haiti, which once ruled the Dominican Republic. The white cross symbolizes the Christian faith that the Dominican Republic had developed when the flag was finalized. The origins of the colors are debated. Red is always agreed to represent the blood shed to make the Dominican Republic free. The blue may represent the virtues of liberty or the blessing of God. The white is said to either represent the dignity of the Dominican people, or their desire for both peace and unity in their home country.
